DNA Stimulation Project: Case Study

The UNE/MerinoLink DNA Stimulation Project is now officially finished and the results have shown significant genetic improvement for those that were actively involved. Importantly, a clear correlation was found between participation/involvement and genetic gain. The 5 year project was a joint undertaking by UNE, NSW DPI, SheepMetrix, MerinoLink and MLA, as well as all of the participants.

The DNA stimulation Project worked with 65 commercial Merino breeders and 26 Ram breeders. All commercial breeders did a Flock Profile test at the beginning and end of the 5 year project. Those that were purchasing rams with ASBVs tracked their Ram Team with the SheepCRC RamSelect tool. The Ram breeders involved used DNA parentage and Genomic testing to improve their depth of full pedigree and subsequently significantly improved the data collected on a series of traits.

As part of the project wrap-up, Ralph recently took part in a case study interview about his involvement and results from the project. The project can be viewed by clicking here.

Rocklyn would like to thank the DNA Stimulation Project Team for this fantastic initiative, which was an incredibly rewarding experience.
